Cheap Car Alarms Can Provide Limited Security
Depending on how much you paid for your car and the neighborhood in which you live, cheap car alarms may serve your purpose. However, if you travel through some not so nice areas and would really hate to lose your car to a car thief, you may want to put out the extra cash and avoid cheap car alarms.
Some cheap car alarms may give you that warm, fuzzy feeling that your car is not going to drive away without you knowing about it, or at the very least hopefully scaring a potential thief away, but a determined car thief will most likely still make off with your vehicle. Many car thieves are not deterred by cheap car alarms and those with a tow truck may just hook it up and drive away, despite the system you have installed.
Your automobile is probably the most valuable thing you will ever own that is equipped with its own getaway system. Many cheap car alarms will honk the horn or activate a local siren when a door is opened. The cheapest of the cheap car alarms will have only one sensor on the driver’s door to sound the alarm when it is opened. A thief breaking the window and climbing in will not activate the alarm and your car is gone.
Designed To Chase Thief Away
With many cheap car alarms, their main purpose is to chase a thief away once the horn starts blowing, as well as drawing attention to the noise. Mainly, they are meant to keep honest people honest and when confronted by an alarm, many car thieves will look for one without an alarm.
Many of the older style cheap car alarms consisted of an on and off switch hidden somewhere inside the car that had a delay of somewhere around 15 seconds or more. When you turned the alarm on, you had that amount of time to get out of the car and lock the door before the alarm was set. When you opened the door, you would have that time delay to turn the alarm off before it was activated. Thieves often could disable the alarm during this brief delay and the cheap car alarms began to get more sophisticated.
Today’s technology has all but eliminated the use of cheap car alarms, however they are still in use in many areas, mostly as a deterrent for amateurs and first-time car thieves. Many believe that if a thief really wants the car, they are going to get it regardless of the sophistication of the installed car alarm.
